A year ago, I had the opportunity to paint in front of the congregation at my church, Tabernacle of Praise. I painted while the worship team sang and danced all around me. It was amazing being a part of this — mixing paint, throwing heavy spots of red paint on the canvas and painting thick swashes of black to the Easter theme of "He Got Up!"
I wanted to show the darkness of the crucifixion. Sin. Death. Betrayal. The blood of Jesus blotting out sin and death. The women preparing the spices for his burial. The anticipation of his rising. Darkness and Light.
I only had about an hour or so for this painting as well as the companion piece that I will post tomorrow. Prior to arriving, I had worked out the composition as smaller gouache paintings. I always sketch first. I have to be honest. I never loved this one. I wasn't sure if I should add more to it back at the studio. Leave it as is. I never got around to doing anything else with it. So, I will just say it is finished. I couldn't post tomorrow's other half of this set without posting this one. So, here it is! It has grown on me. I like that I did it quickly. That was the point. It is so hard to paint in front of a group without feeling pressure — that is has to be just right, or I have to move more quickly.
May you be blessed + comforted by Jesus' amazing love!

Naomi, thanks for posting your Holy week art, it has been my inspiration for my meditations this week, Holy Week is the most sacred week of the year for me, and your amazing talent, has opened the door this week, for authentic worship.
I am so glad you were inspired by my work + God's Word! Thank you, Mama!
My Easter was all the better because of Holy Saturday - the saddest of all Saturdays. Being shut up in a dark grave for a while helps us long for and appreciate the brightness of resurrection. He joins us in our tombs. We join him in his rising.
