The Carrying of the Cross
Reading: Mark: 15:21
Reflection: Given his own cross to carry (Jn.19:17), Jesus carried it by his human strength, not by divine power — and his human strength was failing. He had shown his divinity by silent endurance of the abuse heaped upon him; he now showed his humanity by crumbling beneath the weight of a timber. So one Simon helped him, being forced to bear the weight that Jesus couldn't bear. Together they made their way to Calvary, the bystander bearing the cross on which he — and all guilty bystanders of all time — should have died.
Prayer: Jesus, as sinners we're all guilty bystanders. We should not only carry, but also die upon, our own crosses. But you carried our weight to the point of exhaustion, our sins burdening you beyond what your human strength could bear. We thank you that you carried our sorrows and were crushed for our iniquities. Amen.
